It's so good, you probably won't even notice how good it is, most of the time. You can really see the years of experience and talent behind the design of all these elements. I love a game that lets you reload while in your duck and roll too - excellent duck and rolls Hex! You forget just how perfect this cover system is, and every now and then you'll leap over and kick someone out of cover on the other side. You're always feel under threat too, with enemies charging for you, crumbling cover, and projectile weapons forcing you into a bit of duck and roll. Quite often you are faced with retreat from oncoming enemies. It's not just move, take cover, shoot, move on - you're constantly being pushed around but you rarely get lost. Yeah, they did a great job with that, and there were so many little 'situations'. And sometimes when you do, you don't even end up fighting there anyway. It's all a bit more subtle And you very rarely notice a 'combat path'.
There's a jump in quality of level design - there's more variety in how you move through the world, and there are less of those chocolate bar chunks of cover everywhere. It doesn't feel as static and straight lined as the other two games. Storytelling aside - almost every other detail to Gears 3 is AAA stuff. the rest of the characters blur into the background a bit. I liked most of the story, it pulls you along nicely, but Bajo, it seems like a bit of a trend at the moment to put Aussies in games, along with a variety of our cultural 'one liners'.Īt least it's not bloody Dead Island! Really though, this story is about Marcus, and Dom. I assume it's because of the planet's emmulsion which is a resource. Although Hex, I've never quite worked out why they are on this planet in the first place. And there's some top moments here and there, where you really pay attention to what's going on. But we're not going to talk about the specifics of the story too much, because Gears 3 resolves many of those loose threads from the previous two games - and you need to experience those on your own.Įpic has definitely been working on the way they tell a story though there's been a much needed improvement to the cutscenes and running dialogue. People have destroyed their own cities in the chaos, and created more problems than they've solved, and it seems all hope is lost. Things kicks off with an explosive giant squid battle on a naval base, where many humans have retreated to escape the Locust. But all good things come to an end, and it's time to see how the trilogy finishes up.
Gears of War has been an important franchise to the Xbox 360, and I can't think of a game that does cover-based shooting better - Gears really set the bar.
